Requiem Mass for Sister Columba

Sister Columba, a devoted nun within the Society of St Margaret for almost 60 years, has passed away in Aberdeen at the age of 96.

She was admitted to the Society in October 1964, and remained a faithful servant of God throughout her life.

A Requiem Mass will be held in Aberdeen on Friday 21 April. Full details are published below.
A notice released by the family says: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Sister Columba went peacefully into the arms of Jesus at Persley Castle Nursing Home, Aberdeen on Saturday 8th April 2023.

“Fondly remembered for her tireless and compassionate work in the community in Aberdeen, Sister Columba volunteered in the community nursing home run by the Society caring for the elderly, alongside fulfilling her chaplaincy role at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Following the closure of St. Margaret’s convent in 2002, Sister continued her ministry under the wing of the Walsingham branch of the Society of St Margaret, from her new home in Cattofield Place, Aberdeen.

“A familiar face both at St Margaret’s Church and also at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Aberdeen, where she regularly worshipped, Sister Columba was firmly committed to her Christian faith and to her calling to support the people of Aberdeen, whenever her help and prayers were needed.

“Sister was a beautiful soul who touched the lives of many throughout her life. She had an adventurous spirit and a creative gift, seeing the beauty of creation in nature and shared fond memories of family holidays in Givry, France and later in Pitlochry, Scotland with her sister, Jean.

“Sister Columba will be greatly missed by the Community of Aberdeen, many friends across the world, and her earthly family.”

The Rt Rev Dr John Armes, Acting Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney, said: “I didn’t have the opportunity to meet Sister Columba, but I thank God for her very special gifts and her lifetime of devotion. She died on Holy Saturday as the church waited to celebrate once again the resurrection of our Lord. This is the glorious new life she now shares.”

The funeral service will be held at St Margaret’s Church, Gallowgate, Aberdeen, AB25 1EA at 11.45am on Friday 21 April 2023. All are welcome to attend.
