Vacancy: Buchan Missioner, North Aberdeenshire

Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney
Scottish Episcopal Church

Buchan Missioner

Leading mission in north Aberdeenshire

Introduction

We are looking to appoint a person with gifts in pioneering and entrepreneurship in mission to lead in establishing new congregations and expressions of church in the Buchan area of Aberdeenshire. The missioner will offer support to, and work in partnership with, members of the existing Episcopalian congregations in that area. The person appointed will be a priest and will work closely with the Bishop.

The post-holder will be licensed as associate priest to the churches in Fraserburgh and New Pitsligo, and lead worship and offer pastoral support to those congregations as time allows.

Historically, Buchan has been a centre for Episcopalianism in Scotland. Today many of the remaining congregations are small, and the membership elderly. Those who attend worship are faithful, but few have the energy or vision to develop new expressions of church. In some places there is spoken enthusiasm for supporting projects with children, opening churches (e.g.warm spaces) and community singing.

The area of Buchan runs from Buckie to Fraserburgh, and south from the coast to include Turriff, Mintlaw, and Peterhead. It is an area of farming and fishing with a distinct culture and dialect, where people are friendly and proud of their history and traditions.

This post has come about through the generous benefaction of William Ross Laurie, whose ancestor (Revd William Laurie) was rector at St John’s New Pitsligo.

This post is incumbent standard, according with Provincial terms and conditions as described here.

An excellent house to Provincial Standard is located in Longside.

The post will be for three years in the first instance, extendable after review in the second year.

The appointment is subject to a satisfactory PVG Scheme Record Disclosure

(Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007)

The application form can be downloaded here.

Closing date for applications: 05th July 2024
Visit and interviews to be arranged.
