What is a PVG officer?

A PVG officer, or protecting vulnerable groups officer, is typically responsible for managing the disclosure and vetting process for individuals working with vulnerable groups, ensuring they meet safeguarding requirements.

This role often involves assessing background checks and disclosures to determine a person’s suitability for positions which involve contact with children or vulnerable adults. Additionally, the PVG officer will ensure compliance with safeguarding regulations and contribute to creating a safe environment for all within church.

What are the responsibilities of each church for safeguarding?

Every congregation should select at least one coordinator to take responsibility on behalf of the vestry for ensuring that the work of the church is carried out in accordance with the Law and the church’s policies on the protection of children and vulnerable adults. Vestries may nominate a coordinator to take responsibility for safeguarding. A coordinator may be appointed to more than one congregation in the case of linked charges. Large congregations may need more than one PVG coordinator.
