Lay Readers

Lay Readers are theologically-trained lay people who are called to proclaim the gospel and lead worship, serving alongside clergy to support and develop the life of a congregation.   Their role is governed by Canon law and they are licensed by the Bishop.

Whilst there are certain core responsibilities and expectations of Lay Readers, the shape of their ministry depends on the gifts they bring and the context in which they serve.

They constitute a diocesan resource and are deployed according to the needs identified by their bishop.  In congregations they serve as part of a ministry team under the leadership of the Rector.
