On behalf of the Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney, the historic Kincardine O’Neil Christ Church has welcomed a new Priest-in-Charge. Moving from Southwest Florida in the US, Revd. David Svihel has joined the Aberdeenshire community and has been officially commissioned following a service of induction.
Enticed by the rural beauty of Aberdeenshire and the welcoming community, Revd. David has emigrated from his previous position in the Church of Redeemer in the Diocese of Southwest Florida, where he served as Associate Rector for Adult Formation and Liturgy.
Although significantly different in size and scale, as part of the Episcopal Church (USA), the Diocese of Southwest Florida shares several similarities with the Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney, which is part of the Scottish Episcopal Church. The similarities between the churches have already been beneficial in helping David settle into his new role, in which he has been warmly received by his new congregation.
Originally born in Minnesota, David has lived across the US, occupying several roles within and surrounding the Episcopal Church (USA). Prior to ordination, he was a youth minister at Episcopal Churches in Savannah, Georgia, and Louisville, Kentucky.
The nearly 1600-year-old Christ Church, the only operational church building in Kincardine O’Neil, welcomed guests and church members to a special service recognising David’s appointment. The service, hosted by the Diocese’s Rt Rev Anne Dyer, allowed those in attendance a first impression of David’s commitment to his faith and the community he serves.
During the service, David was provided with symbols of his Ministry to the church to make his position official.
Following the service, David commented: “As the only local operational church, Christ Church has long been billed as the Village Church, providing a space where everyone is welcome. I have to say, upon arrival, that reputation has been richly earned. Moving anywhere new can be a daunting experience, and although there are differences between my previous church and my new home, I, alongside my family, have been guided by a shared faith between both communities in this decision.
The welcoming team at the Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney, led by Bishop Anne, and the new community surrounding me have demonstrated that this was the right move to make. I am looking forward to getting to know them and the beautiful surrounding area more within my new position.”
