Mothers’ Union

The Mothers’ Union (MU) is a Christian organisation concerned with marriage and family life. At present there are 4 million members from 83 countries worldwide who are supported by a network of volunteers who generously give of their time to help others, whether by running local projects or by supporting international campaigns.

The MU trains and supports financially over 300 workers from around the world, drawn from local dioceses who speak the local languages, understand the local culture and customs, know the problems which face their communities and are able to provide vital leadership.

The Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney has the following branches, most of whom meet twice a month:

All of the Mother’s Union activities are underpinned by prayer.  There is a prayer group that meets at 2:30pm on the Third Tuesday of every month in the Cathedral Hall for prayer and fellowship.  From this, there is a prayer circle of about 17 members who pray for anyone who asks for prayer.

Mothers’ Union members from around the Diocese are involved in the following projects:

  • Supporting Grampian Women’s Aid by providing toiletries and toilet bags and also small sums of cash for starter packs for families moving on.
  • Some members knit little hats and shawls for premature babies and make gowns for stillborn babies.
  • Linus blankets – for children who have long stays in hospital – children keep these blankets.
  • Knit hats for Mission to Seafarers.
  • AFIA (Away From It All) holidays for families who have never had a holiday and cannot afford it normally.  Families come from all walks of life and they can be of any faith background.
